Was the Rack Trap winnable?

Postby ItsaMeRBN1 » June 11th, 2014, 11:49 am

The Rack Trap was created by Jigsaw to test Jeff's forgiveness of Timothy Young for the murder of his son. He had to grab a key that was attached to a shotgun. After grabbing the key (at which point Timothy's head is being twisted) he tries to unlock the device but can't. After shouting 'I forgive him!' Timothy's neck is fatally broken. Was this trap altered by Amanda to kill Timothy anyway or was there actually a way for Jeff to win this trap?
This may seem really obvious to some people, I just never understood the way to win, if there was one.
Congratulations, you are still alive. Most people are so ungrateful to be alive. But not you. Not anymore.

As I recall, a slightly different version of this scene plays out between the director's cut and the theatrical cut. In the theatrical cut, we see Jeff look for the keyhole to save Timothy (more accurately, we see that there is no keyhole to find), but not in the director's cut. For me, this little difference changed the context of the scene completely, and left quite a few questions unanswered.

I have the director's cut and could post its version of the Rack scene for comparative purposes; does anyone, anywhere, have the theatrical version?

Netflix likes to periodically put these movies up... I wonder if their version of III is the theatrical cut? This should answer the question definitively, provided it is...

I do. I haven't watched it in a while, but I could check it out if you want.

However, I think it could have been. That was my impression after the Rack setup scene in SAW VI.

Personally I think Jeff just didn't find the keyhole. Honestly, he didn't look for it quite long before he dropped the key.

I was looking very closely at the bit when Jeff was looking for the keyhole, and I must confess I didn't even see it. I didn't realize it wasn't there.
